What is the course about?

The course brings together the critical elements of strategy and risk and outlines how and why they need to work together in an increasingly uncertain world. Various tools to help risk and strategy professionals evaluate and analyse their specific contexts are taught, together with how the human element plays out in risk appetite and culture and ultimately decision making.

Course Objectives/What will participants have gained once they have completed the course?

Course attendees will learn how to integrate strategy and risk and analyse their environments or contexts using a core set of strategic thinking tools and competencies, including complexity and integration analysis. These tools will allow them to identify risk both positive and negative and prioritise those which are the most important. Attendees will also be given insight into the human aspect of risk appetite and risk culture. Overall, this will increase attendee and company resilience and agility.

Who should attend?

Strategy, Risk and Resilience Managers as well as other employees that are developing strategies or new risk response approaches that require integrated thinking, eg finance, HR, sales development etc.

Wendy Poulton is a director of Strategic Mindsets. She has 30 years’ experience in the energy sector and 20 years’ experience in risk management as a manger managing operational risk and as a strategy development manager where risk was fully integrated into the strategy development process. She was instrumental in developing a strategic risk management process, into her former company. She has been on various Boards of a commercial entity and business associations and chaired a Board Risk Committee for several years. Wendy is also responsible for project managing and editing three Energy Risk Reports for the South African National Energy Association, one of which won an IRMSA Award in 2019. She has an MSc from the University of Pretoria, has completed the Management Advancement Programme at WITS Business School, the Executive Education Programme at GIBBS, has a diploma in Strategy and Innovation from Oxford University’s SAID Business School and is also a coach. She has successfully completed the IRMSA Risk Practitioner examinations. Sherrie Donaldson is an entrepreneur and CEO of African Innovators. She was accountable for risk and risk mitigation strategies in various Divisions of Adcorp Limited. She also led a number of strategic innovation initiatives and ideation of new business solutions. Sherrie has been involved with the BRICS Business Council Skills Development Working Group, where she is actively working on funding for SA research in the Future of Work and the Skills of the Future. She has an MBA from the Graduate School of Business University of Cape Town but believes its not what you did in the past but what you are learning now that is most important in this era of lifelong learning.
